Tesla is cranking up the speed, range, power and price on its Model S sedan and Model X SUV with the introduction of the P100D model.
When using Ludicrous mode, the Model S P100D can jump to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds, making it the quickest car currently in production. Only the Ferrari LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Sypder are quicker, but both of these were limited-run cars and are not currently being built. With the new 100 kWh battery capacity, range has increased to 315 miles, making it the first electric car to push past 300 miles of range.
The Model X SUV will also receive the 100 kWh battery, allowing it to sprint to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds and run up to 289 miles on a single charge. This larger batter will only be available in performance, all-wheel drive versions of both the Model S and X and must be equipped with Ludicrous mode.

Pricing of course will also rise, with Tesla CEO Elon Musk saying that the complexity of the larger battery pack is significantly greater than the smaller 90 kWh version. Getting into a Model S P100D with Ludicrous Mode will start at $134,500, a jump of $9,500 over the previous most expensive Model S. Order books are open now and deliveries will begin next month, though Musk warned that production would be constrained at first to about 200 of the larger batteries per week.
Getting into a Model X P100D with Ludicrous Mode will set you back $135,500.
For now, the larger battery will only be offered on these high trim cars, though it will be available in cheaper cars eventually. Tesla is trying to raise as much money as it can to support the introduction of its new Model 3, a point it emphasized in its release, imploring customers to buy these expensive models in order to bankroll the Model 3.
The range of pricing for the Model S now stretches from $66,000 on the low end up to $134,500, plus a two-year lease deal that is being offered until September.
