After announcing more expensive Model S and Model X P100D models, Tesla has also increased the price of its Autopilot semi-autonomous software.
When ordering Autopilot with a new car it is now a $3,000 option, up from the previous $2,500, while having Autopilot added to an existing Tesla now costs $3,500, also up $500 from $3,000.
Autopilot can take over steering, lane changes, throttle and braking on the highway, though the driver is still expected to be alert and ready to react to road conditions.
Prices for other Tesla options, like air suspension and rear-facing third row seats, haven’t been changed. Autopilot itself hasn’t changed either, with a Tesla representative telling Electrek that the new cost better reflects “the value of the product.”

The Model S P100D Ludicrous is capable of running to 60 mph from a stand still in 2.5 seconds while it can travel a full 315 miles on a single charge. Prices for the new car begin at $134,5000.
Tesla is gearing up to launch the Model 3 with the goal of making electric vehicles attainable to the masses, something that the P100D models certainly aren’t doing. But, Tesla says that “without customers willing to buy the expensive Model S and X, we would be unable to fund the smaller, more affordable Model 3 development.”
