2013 Fiat 500e

Last last year Fiat unveiled its electric 500e during the L.A. Auto Show, a car that Chrysler will take a $10,000 bath on every time it sells according to  CEO Sergio Marchionne.

Fiat won’t sell the electric car in Italy. In fact, the car is planned for the California market to comply with the California Air Resources Board’s strict zero-emissions vehicle requirement. Customers opting for a 500e will also be offered a gasoline-burning alternative car through a partnership with car rental company Enterprise.

The car goes on sale in California next month with an MSRP of $32,500, but Chrysler is only expecting to sell a few hundred of the EVs to comply with CARB requirements, allowing it to continue selling cars in the state.

Chrysler is far from the only brand complying building a small number of electric cars to comply with CARB rules. Honda is building an electric Fit and Toyota’s RAV4 EV, which it built in collaboration with EV maker Tesla.
