Genovation Cars has once again set a record for the fastest street-legal electric car, the third time the brand has captured the title in the past year.
The Genovation GXE hit a top speed of 209 mph at the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds at the Kennedy Space Center in Merritt Island, Florida, cracking its own precord of 205.6 mph. This car is a prototype based on a sixth-generation Corvette Z06, though the actual production model will use the seventh-generation Corvette as its base.
All the records have been certified independently by the International Mile Racing Association (IMRA).
Driving the car up to those speeds are electric motors that make over 700 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque combined with a unique battery management system and some special inverters and batteries. During normal operation, Genovation claims the car can travel up to 150 miles on a single charge. Unlike many electric vehicles, the GXE is available with a choice of gearboxes, either a seven-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic. A low center of gravity thanks to the batteries and new 50/50 weight distribution also help the car in the handling department.
Genovation has now begun accepting orders for an all-new GXE based on the seventh-generation Corvette. Just 75 production GXEs will be built and they won’t come cheap, with pricing to start around $750,000.
Watch the GXE set a separate record for the fastest production electric vehicle in the standing mile below.
