For once, it’s an airbag recall that doesn’t involve Takata airbag inflators.
The 2015-2017 Nissan Leaf and 2014-2017 Nissan Sentra are being recalled to address an issue where the airbags may deploy improperly in the event of a crash. The defect has been tied to supplier Daicel, a Kentucky-based company and affects a total of 25,283 units.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall is “due to airbag inflator components manufactured by a tier 5 supplier with atypical conditions that have since been corrected, certain front passenger airbags may not perform as designed. More specifically, the coolant within these inflators may have been affected by two potential conditions.” Those two potential conditions are rust and excessive tooling wear.

The Nissan Leaf electric vehicles affected by the recall were built from September 30, 2014 to December 13, 2016 while the Nissan Sentras were assembled between September 1, 2014 and December 31, 2016.
To resolve the issue, Nissan technicians will replace the front passenger airbag inflator free of charge. The recall is expected to begin June 11.
