Toyota C-HR, Prius Plug-in Recalled for Separate Issues

Toyota North America has announced two separate recalls, one affecting the 2018 C-HR and another for the 2012-2015 Prius Plug-in Hybrid.

The first recall affects around 28,600 C-HR units and involves an electronic parking brake that may not disengage or apply, resulting in noncompliance with federal safety standard. To resolve the software issue, Toyota dealerships will update the ECU free of charge. Affected owners will receive a notification via first-class mail later this month.

The second recall involves roughly 39,900 Prius Plug-in Hybrid units from the 2012-2015 model years. According to Toyota, driving those vehicles in EV mode repeatedly under high-load conditions, such as long hill climbs, could cause a fuse to malfunction. If the condition occurs, drivers will see warning lights and messages, and in some cases, reduced power. Under more extreme circumstances, the hybrid system could shut down, resulting in the loss of motive power. The condition shouldn’t affect the power steering and braking systems.

To resolve the issue, dealers will replace the fuse with an improved unit free of charge. Owners will be notified via first-class mail starting January 2018.
