The Nissan Leaf-based Infiniti electric car will use induction-based charging, aiming to do away with charging cables.

As expected, the Infiniti EV will feature a completely different exterior and interior than the Nissan Leaf as it will appeal to more high-end, luxury car owners. But part of that luxury motoring, according to Infiniti head Andy Palmer, is to do away with having to “couple up cables to a plug socket, dragging them on the ground and on you as you go.”

The problem with induction charging will be similar to what’s plaguing the electric car market now – the infrastructure. The success of Infiniti’s electric car will hinge on induction charging being introduced around the world, making its roll out dependent on what regions of the world are supporting it.

To help promote the concept of induction charging, Infiniti is pushing other automakers to develop their systems on an open-source platform, rather than each automaker individually investing into its own systems.
