Chinese company Future Mobility has unveiled its new Byton SUV at CES 2018 in Las Vegas – an electric concept it’s calling a ‘Smart Intuitive Vehicle’ or SIV for short.

Byton’s SUV, which should enter production by 2019, will be offered with either a single electric motor or a dual motor setup. The single motor setup will deliver a healthy 272 horsepower to the rear wheels and will boast a driving range of around 250 miles thanks to a 71 kWh battery pack. The dual-motor setup, meanwhile, will have an output of 476 hp and 323 miles of range from a 95 kWh battery pack. Byton also wants the production version to feature Level 3 autonomous driving, but it’s not clear how far along they are on the self-driving front.

The inside of the Byton concept is where the real story is. The dashboard is occupied by an absolutely massive digital display, which we’re told is more than a meter wide. The huge screen is joined by a tinier 8-inch screen mounted on the steering wheel. If you think these screens sound distracting, then say no more. Byton has included face and gesture tracking cameras in its digitally-dominated dash, which allow for different system input options other than touch or voice. The system will also leverage a user’s wearable gadgets for fitness tracking.

Byton’s SUV – especially the overly sized digital display, may seem like the stuff of fantasy, but the company promises it’s actually a feasible product. The finished car should cost somewhere around $45k and go on sale by 2020. It will arrive before that time in China, with Future Mobility planning to put it on Chinese roads by 2019.

“The Byton Concept SUV connects both the automotive and digital industries in ways that will deliver an entirely new connective experience for people on the move. The result is the world’s first Smart Intuitive Vehicle, or SIV,” said Byton co-founder Dr. Carsten Breitfeld.

The Byton concept will be on display at CES 2018 all this week.
