Daimler has released full specs on its new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter van, which is expected to eventually arrive in North America.
The eSprinter is a fully electric version of the next-generation Sprinter van, which was unveiled earlier this year. The van will be offered with either a 41 or 55 kWh battery pack and a single, 84 kW electric motor. The 41 kWh battery pack will provide a range of around 71.5 miles with a 2,292 lb (1,040 kg) payload on board. The 55 kWh battery gets 93 miles of range, but due to the heavier battery pack, that rating is only applicable when carrying a lighter payload of 1,984 lbs (900 kg).
In addition to the full payload, those range estimates are also rated in “unfavorable” conditions such as low ambient temperatures – so they should prove to be on-par with the van’s real-world range once it’s released.
Daimler claims the eSprinter will charge from flat to full in 6 to 8 hours using the 7.2 kW onboard charger, or 45 minutes using a DC fast combo charger. Unlike the standard Sprinter, which is available in a variety of body styles and size, the eSprinter will only be offered as a panel van with a high roof.

The van’s single electric motor is rated at 112 hp (84 kW) and 221 lb-ft of torque. Customers can also choose between a maximum speed of 80 km/h and 120 km/h depending on their needs. The former of those helps to preserve battery range and is better suited to city driving, whereas the former may be favored by those doing longer hauls.
Daimler says that even though the eSprinter will be more expensive to purchase than a comparable diesel Sprinter, reduced running costs and local tax incentives will even the playing field for most buyers. Full pricing details will be released shortly.
Mercedes-Benz is hoping to offer the eSprinter in North America in coming years, but for now, the van is for Europe only.
