According to BMW, about 100,000 people around the world have reserved a spot to test drive the i3 electric vehicle.
The news comes from the German automaker’s sales boss, Ian Robertson, who also added that BMW has “significant numbers of deposits” already for the car. BMW is coming close to wrapping up testing on its i3 electric car and the production model is scheduled to make its official debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Robertson believes that the i3 will be a game changer in the market, since it was a vehicle built from the ground-up to be an EV. Most of the EVs in today’s market were simply existing models with an electric powertrain swapped in. Unlike many that continue to be skeptical about electric vehicles, Robertson believes that the future is bright and that battery technology will grow exponentially over the next few years.
The BMW i3 will be the automaker’s first vehicle in its “i” lineup, which will also include the i8 plug-in hybrid supercar. It will be priced similar to the existing 3 Series model.
