The all-electric crossover from Jaguar has turned in a production EV record lap time at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

With professional race car driver Randy Pobst behind the wheel, the factory Jaguar I-Pace HSE First Edition turned in a lap time of 1:48.18. Motor Trend believes that time is good enough for the fastest lap at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in a four-door stock production electric vehicle.

Set to go on sale in the U.S. later this year, the I-Pace will be on display at the upcoming 2018 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

To put that lap time into perspective, it’s about 20 seconds slower than the current production car record holder, the Dodge Viper ACR at 1:28.65.

In the past, Motor Trend has taken numerous cars around Laguna Seca with Pobst behind the wheel. Cars that turned in comparable lap times to the I-Pace include the 2007 Mitsubishi Lancer EVO IX MR (1:47.93), 2007 BMW 335i (1:49.04), and 2013 Ford Focus ST (1:49.30). In other words, the I-Pace is mighty impressive on the track, considering it’s an all-electric crossover built for comfort rather than tearing up the track.

The Jaguar I-Pace will start from $70,495 including destination and features dual permanent magnet motors which provide a combined 394 horsepower and 512 pound-feet of torque. It is capable of going zero-to-60 mph in 4.5 seconds.
