Surprise Tesla Debut Was a Mock Up Roadster Without an Interior

Tesla made a lot of noise about a surprise debut coming to the inaugural Grand Basel auto show in Switzerland.

The electric-car maker even sent out invitations to owners for the debut. Quickly, the media speculated the production 2020 Roadster would debut.

Indeed, the Tesla Roadster did show up, but only as a “dummy.” Green Car Reports reported on Wednesday the car shown was a mock-up and did not include its touted three-motor powertrain producing “10,000 Newton meters” of torque, or 620-mile claimed electric range. The Roadster shown didn’t even feature an interior.

To the company’s credit, the Grand Basel auto show is described as a celebration of architecture and design. Thus, the Roadster shown was likely meant to display its style, and for the first time in a white exterior color. For those who are eagerly awaiting the electric sports car, it was still likely a disappointment.

When it does arrive, Tesla said the Roadster will do 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds. Production will supposedly start in 2020 as soon as Tesla sorts out the Model 3’s “production hell.” Aside from the Roadster, Tesla still has plans for a Model Y crossover SUV, the Semi tractor-trailer, and potentially a pickup truck.

Buyers can claim their own Roadsters now, however, with a $50,000 deposit required within 10 days of signing a contract. Special “Founders Edition” cars require the car’s full $250,000 asking price up front. The regular Roadster will start at $200,000.
