Mercedes-Benz has a host of battery-electric and electrified cars coming in the near future, but the ultra-luxurious EQS sedan will be the first to ride on a dedicated electric-car architecture.
Autocar reported Thursday the EQS electric sedan, which will rival the Tesla Model S and Porsche Taycan (formerly called the Mission E), will sit atop a platform called MEA2. Mercedes-Benz’s first two electric cars, the recently revealed EQC and forthcoming EQA hatchback, will ride on modified GLC and A-Class platforms.

MEA2 will feature a large amount of aluminum to keep weight down and boasts the ability to design electric cars with a completely flat floor. Without a transmission tunnel, designers have been giddy to better utilize cabin space. The EQS will have a footprint smaller than the traditional S-Class sedan, but size up larger than an E-Class. Autocar speculated the EQS will be similarly sized to the CLS with extremely short overhangs and a short hood. Like the EQC electric crossover SUV, the EQS should see a dual-motor powertrain—one electric motor on each axle giving the car all-wheel drive.
The EQC, EQA, and EQS are only the tip of the iceberg for Mercedes-Benz’s electric-car portfolio. The company has promised 10 purely electric cars coming in the near future. In a massive $11.8-billion investment package, Mercedes will roll out 130 electrified models in the next seven years. New models will range from mild-hybrids under the brand’s EQ Boost name, EQ Power plug-in hybrids, and fully electric EQ models.
