Telsa Motors has purchased a 35-acre piece of land adjacent to its manufacturing facility in Fremont, Calif.

Shanna Hendriks, a Tesla spokesperson, told MercuryNews.com that the company plans to use the facility as the company expands its current operation, but didn’t offer specific details. However, the space contains an old test track used by both General Motors and Toyota that Tesla could expand on to allow its engineers to better test products.

With two vehicles under its belt, the company has plans for a crossover based on the same platform as the currently-available Model S, followed by a smaller and less expensive sedan. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has also said in the past that the company s flirting with the idea of building an electric pickup truck.

The fact that Tesla bought the land likely hints at a strong second-quarter report, which will be released on August 7. Wall Street was taken by surprise earlier in the year when the company reported its first-quarter earnings with the first profit in the maker’s history. Since then, the company has made a series of product announcements including a battery swap program and plans to expand its proprietary charging network.

A more robust testing facility could play an integral role for Tesla as it begins to take orders in both Europe and China and production ramps up to meet anticipated demand.
