Apple wants to dominate more than just your radio screen, it seems. At the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple showed off concepts of a much, much more expansive CarPlay setup.
This new full CarPlay suite is part of Apple’s new iOS 16 update. This update is a serious upgrade in functionality and ability, now the phone mirroring software can do more than just radio stations and music. The tech demo shows CarPlay controlling HVAC controls, and primary gauge cluster information, like the speedometer, or remaining EV range.
Apple says the next generation of CarPlay will be compatible with a wide range of screen types and aspect ratios, from the teensy double-DIN aftermarket units to the pillar-to-pillar displays that are disconcertingly starting to trickle into production cars. The whole system would be interlinked to other Apple products, like a driver would be able to manage Apple’s Smart Home technologies all from the CarpPlay entire car OS.
It’s cool-looking, though. The setup utilizes Apple’s characteristic attention to design and pretty user interface, but we remain unsure as to what real-world usability will be like. Most notably, CarPlay has always been run directly from the iPhone itself, and this setup does not change that. Now, a regular ol’ iPhone will have an outrageous amount of access to vehicle data and will need to be able to flawlessly run an entire vehicle straight from a cell phone.
Apple didn’t say which specific vehicles would use the new CarPlay, but did rattle off a list of manufacturers that are “excited to bring this new vision of CarPlay to customers.” The first vehicles to use this CarpPlay capability won’t be on the streets until at least 2023.
