Vietnamese EV automaker Vinfast has taken more concrete steps to sell vehicles in the US. The ribbon-cutting ceremony for its first six confirmed stores in California will happen on July 14.
The Vietnamese EV maker has picked six California cities as locations for its retail stores. The first six Vinfast showrooms will be in Santa Monica, San Diego, San Mateo, Corte Madera, Commerce, and Berkley. The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the first locations will be on July 14.
Vinfast’s global EV aspirations seem to hinge on the automaker making a big impact on North America and Europe. Currently, the automaker sells restyled versions of the Chevrolet Spark, BMW X5, and BMW 5-series, but the automaker plans to stop selling those, transitioning to its home-grown full EV efforts. It has one EV on sale in its home market, the Vinfast e34, a subcompact electric crossover. Controversially, Vinfast leases its EV batteries separate, through a tiered plan, separate from the vehicle’s purchase.
For North America, Vinfast plans its onslaught with the VF8 and VF9 compact and midsized fully-electric crossovers. The brand has got big plans for the US and Canada, with a goal of selling vehicles in the United States, and breaking ground on a brand new manufacturing plant in North Carolina, all by the end of 2022.
These first six retail stores are the first of 30 planned stores that the automaker wants to open in California alone by the end of 2022. The brand’s US headquarters is in Los Angeles.
