New EV Motor Design From Mahle, Claims to be Wear Free

EVs are already low maintenance, but one manufacturer could make them virtually free to maintain in the form of a “wear-free” electric motor.

German automotive supplier Mahle claims to have developed the most durable electric motor, ever. Dubbed the SCT-E motor (super continuous torque), Mahle says that the motor can run “indefinitely, at very high speeds”, due to a great leap forward in cooling technology. The motor is light, efficient, and can be assembled without the use of rare-earth metals, upon customer request. Mahle says the motor is suitable for various applications, from commercial equipment to sports cars.

The SCT-E motor’s continuous output (the max the motor can operate at without overheating), is over 90 percent of its peak output. This means, in theory, the motor should be able to operate very fast, for a very long time, without overheating. Mahle says that this is due to specialized oil cooling, which wicks away heat — heat that can be reused, like say, in a vehicle’s HVAC system.

Right now, the Mahle SCT-E hasn’t been installed in any vehicle yet, so we don’t know how well the brand’s claims will hold up in the real world. The vast majority of EV manufacturers build and implement their own electric motors for their products, with exceptional efficiency and longevity. Mahle hasn’t even released power or consumption figures for any variant of the SCT-E. Still, the brand claims that the SCT-E motor will be shown off at IAA Transportation in September 2022 in Hanover.
