The BMW i4 just got a lot cheaper, and more competitive.
BMW announced its intentions to introduce a cheaper BMW i4 variant; the BMW i4 eDrive 35. This new model joins the i4 eDrive 40 and 45 models and is now the cheapest BMW EV in North America, now that the i3 is officially gone.
The 2024 BMW i4 eDrive35 isn’t quite as fast or doesn’t go as far as its bigger siblings, though. The eDrive35 makes do with a single motor setup, only good for 281 Horsepower, and a 5.8 second 0-60 run if BMW’s figures prove true. The eDrive35 is only rated for 260 miles, from its roughy 70kWh sized battery. This is smaller than the 81 kWh battery on other BMW i4s. The car can handle speeds of up to 120KW for DC fast charging, allowing for a 10% to 80% recharge time BMW says comes in as little as 32 minutes. Pricing for the BMW i4 eDrive35 will start at $51,995, with a $995 destination fee, about $4,000 cheaper than the BMW i4 eDrive40.
This cheaper BMW i4 should make the model more competitive against a growing crop of electrified EV shapes from Ford, Hyundai, and Kia. The i4 eDrive35 is only a little more expensive than a single-motor Tesla Model 3 long range and offers similar range and performance. But, the BMW will still qualify for the US Federal tax credit program, whereas no Tesla has qualified for quite some time. BMW says that the production of the BMW i4 eDrive35 will start this fall, with examples reaching dealers by early 2023.
