A small number of BMW i4 and iX EVs could catch fire.
Recently, BMW recalled a handful of BMW i4 and iX EVs, due to fire risk. The number is small, a mere 83 cars, but the risk is serious. The NHTSA is instructing owners to keep their vehicles away from buildings, not to store the vehicles inside, and not to drive or charge their vehicles. It affects the BMW iX xDrive50, iX M60, and the BMW i4 eDrive40 and M50.
BMW investigated a fire incident of a 2022 i4 back in April, learning that there was a manufacturing defect in some battery cells, that can cause a short circuit, and thus a fire. BMW has, however, figured out which batteries are affected. If the BMW iX was produced between December 2nd, 2021, and June 30th, 2022, or the BMW i4 was produced between November 22nd, 2021, and June 13th, 2022, then you’re likely part of this recall. BMW has notified owners affected by the recall. The defective batteries will be replaced, free of charge. BMW says that there haven’t been any injuries due to the fires.
We’re glad that BMW caught this early before catastrophic manufacturing errors lead to a serious battery fault, in which nearly all batteries in all models, need to be replaced, a la Chevrolet Bolt. Electric vehicle battery fires are dangerous. They burn hot and require a lot of water and special training to extinguish.
