In theory, this should make DC fast charging easier to comprehend.
Volkswagen-owned Electrify America and Electrify Canada released a new naming, and branding scheme for its DC fast chargers, recently. Across the US and Canada, the brand operates a fleet of DC fast chargers ranging from 150 KW to 350 KW, save for the handful of CHAdeMO-equipped 50 KW DC fast chargers.
Under the brand’s new scheme, the 150 KW DC fast chargers will be called Ultra-Fast, and the 350 KW, Hyper-Fast. The Ultra-Fast label will be teal, with two bolt icons (indicating speed). The Hyper-fast label will be green, with three lighting bolt icons, signifying its super speedy charging ability. Electrify America insists that the naming conventions will simplify the charging experience. “We want to help make the transition to EV charging easier by translating kilowatt ratings into simpler names like Hyper-Fast and Ultra-Fast with corresponding colors to help them make a selection at the charger,” said Robert Barrosa, the senior director, sales, business development and marketing of Electrify America. “. It should not require a calculator to figure out what charger’s power output may best match the capabilities of their EV,” he continued.
Also announced, is “balanced” charging for the new Hyper-fast stations. Balanced 350 KW stations are side by side; when multiple vehicles are plugged in, the charging rate allowed for both can add up to the maximum of 350 KW. When one vehicle unplugs, then the max 350 KW can be doled back to the remaining vehicle, if it can handle that. Whatever the case, Electrify America and Electrify Canada promise at least 150 KW speeds per car when connected.
This Electrify America/Canada rebranding is the result of extensive research, complete with a research white paper, that identified one of the biggest issues with electric adoption and charging. This new branding will be rolled out to all Electrify America and Electrify Canada stations in the near future.
