Polestar wants to produce a completely climate-neutral car by 2030.

Dubbed the “Polestar 0” plan, Polestar’s goal to create a completely climate-neutral car just gained twelve new collaborators, quadrupling the original number of participants.

The Polestar 0 plan is admittedly very lofty; Polestar calls it a “moon-shot goal” in its own press release. But, the company feels it is possible. Polestar’s goal is to create a completely climate-neutral car, without offsetting. Meaning, no weird carbon credits, tree-planting, or tricks and loopholes to make a vehicle “technically” climate-neutral.

Polestar says it, and the Polestar 0 collaborators, will achieve this by specializing and streamlining its specific areas of expertise. Whether that be plastics, chemicals, composites, and metals, each brand will deeply look at its manner of making, to become truly climate neutral. “Our new partners will help develop solutions that don’t currently exist and they embrace the challenge of finding new technologies,” said the lead of the Polestar 0 project, Hans Pehrson.

All companies involved are invested in “(decarbonizing) the complete supply chain and manufacturing process.” Polestar thinks that the lessons learned and applied in the Polestar 0 project, will spread outward to other industries, causing them to invest in decarbonizing as well. For right now, the Polestar 0 project is moving full steam ahead. “The next five years will be critical,” says Pehrson.

The Polestar 0 project is still open for collaboration, though. From September 14 forward, the project has put out an open call for even more collaborators.
