The United States EV infrastructure game just got a lot more serious.

The first 35 states’ EV charging infrastructure plans was approved by the Biden Administration recently. These plans were supposed to be submitted to the US government on August 1. In those plans, each state was to formulate ideas to expand EV charging access in their respective states. The plans were to give special credence to charging deserts, and electrifying America’s highways. “With the first set of approvals we are announcing today, 35 states across the country – with Democratic and Republican governors – will be moving forward to use these funds to install EV chargers at regular, reliable intervals along their highways,” said US Transportation Secretary, Pete Buttigieg.

Now, 35 plans have been approved, including those for Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. With approval, the states now have access to up to $900 million of funding to develop their respective charging infrastructure plans. The remaining plans are expected to be approved by September 30.

The approval of the EV infrastructure plans is part of the Biden Administration’s plan to spend $5 billion over five years on EV infrastructure development. We don’t know the nitty-gritty details of each state’s charging infrastructure plan, though. There have been no details as to what minimum charging speeds each state will install, where chargers will be installed, or what brand will be installed, either. Still, some charging infrastructure is far better than what currently exists – which isn’t much at all. As each state starts to build out its charging infrastructure, stay tuned for new charging locations, especially around highways.
