Uber Aims To Go Fully Electric By 2030

Uber wants to be super green in Canada, Europe, and the United States by 2030.

In a statement to CBS News, Uber’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced that it plans to switch to an entirely electric fleet by 2030. This change would affect all Uber vehicles in Europe, Canada, and the United States, and comes hot on the heels of Uber’s plan to go fully electric in London by 2025. “We have a target to be fully electric in the U.S., Canada, and Europe,” said Khosrowshahi.

That fully-electric promise doesn’t make exceptions for hybrid cars, either – “No, if we’re doing our job, we’re gonna be all-electric,” said  Khosrowshahi. This means that hybrid vehicles won’t be included in Uber’s promise for full electrification; it’s all BEV or bust, baby.

That’s a tall, tall, order for the ride-sharing service that arguably doesn’t actually have a fleet in the first place. Although some drivers do have access to Hertz electric vehicle rentals, like the Tesla Model 3, many drivers are reliant on using their own personal vehicles to work for the service. With this new change, anyone interested in driving for the service in the future will have to buy an EV. Currently, Uber claims to have  25,000 EVs in its “fleet” with plans to double that number by next year. Uber has pledged $800 million to help its drivers transition to electric vehicles. The service also incentives current EV drivers by paying extra money to EV drivers who accept and perform certain rides.
