Hertz and BP put their foot on the gas of EV charging infrastructure plans.
Announced last week, BP and Hertz have signed a “memorandum of understanding,” an important step that unites the two large companies. BP and Hertz plan to start an infrastructure of charging stations for Hertz customers, using the BP Pulse infrastructure as a base. “We are excited to partner with bp pulse to create a national charging infrastructure for the Hertz EV fleet, thereby growing the number of charging options available to our customers and providing them with a premium electric experience and lower emission travel options,” said Hertz CEO Stephen Scherr.
The plan is multi-faceted. For starters, these charging stations will serve as ways to quickly recharge Hertz fleet vehicles between customers. It will alter BP’s Omega management software to ensure that Hertz fleet vehicles are recharged economically, like automating the process so charging happens when charging rates are cheapest. The charging hubs will be based out of Hertz locations, and serve not only the fleet’s needs but the needs of the general public, too. Hertz already has investments in charging infrastructure, but the partnership with BP will serve to further expand that reach.
Recently, Hertz has been in the news for its plans to buy thousands of EVs to serve in its rental car fleets. Currently, models like the Polestar 2, Tesla Model 3, Chevrolet Bolt EV, and Bolt EUV can be rented at Hertz. The brand plans to continually add more EV models to its rental fleet in the near future.
