Truck, Truck, Truck. Young people really want EV trucks, especially from Toyota.
The North American EV revolution has taken a truck-shaped form, but it’s been the realm of big trucks. The Rivian R1T, Ford F-150 Lightning, GMC Hummer EV, and forthcoming Chevrolet Silverado EV are all big, full-sized brutes. A recent study from Autolist showed that millennials are craving a smaller, midsized Toyota Tacoma EV.
Right now, the Toyota Tacoma EV is mostly speculation. True, Toyota did show a midsize truck Tacoma-shaped thing in its EV onslaught months ago, but the brand didn’t give much information aside from a computer rendering and a quick glimpse of a non-functional concept in a dark room. That didn’t stop the EV curious from latching on, though. The Tacoma EV generated the most interest from Millennials and non-truck owners, according to Autolist’s most likely to buy survey.
Autolist’s study doesn’t just focus on the likely Tacoma EV, it exposes the desires and market trends toward electric trucks as a whole. The F-150 Lightning is the most popular truck amongst EV and Truck owners alike, especially among Gen X and Baby Boomers. Interestingly, Gen Z had an affinity for the Tesla Cybertruck, 32% of Gen Zers surveyed chose it as their top, most likely purchase choice; yet another EV truck that only currently exists in theory.
The study caps off with some of the most common concerns of EV truck buyers – price and charging accessibility. In all, 51% of EV truck buyers cited price as their main concern with an electric truck.
It sounds like that if Toyota can manufacture an electric Tacoma at a reasonable price, it’ll have a surefire hit.
