The Scottish-Made Munro Mk1 Is A Possible US-Bound EV

This ultra-boxy vehicle truly is a go-anywhere EV SUV.

Scottish-based manufacturer Munro took the wraps off its Munro Mk1 SUV. Sure, maybe it looks like it’s made of steel sheets that you could buy at any hardware store, but the brand is aiming for a go-anywhere, do-anything vehicle powered by electricity.

Although in the same vein as say, the Bollinger EV, or gas-powered big SUVs like the Land Rover Defender, the Munro MK1 is a tough truck with extreme off-road capability. It’s doggedly hardy and traditional, for example, instead of using in-wheel motors or axle-mounted motors like many modern EVs, the Munro has a traditional 4WD system, like what you’d find in a jeep. The electric motor feeds into a transfer case and solid axles, two things that should make for a mountain goat-like off-road performance. It has a whopping 18.9 inches of ground clearance, and a very impressive 84-degree approach angle, 51-degree departure angle, and a 31.6 break over angle. Very little should be able to stand in this truck’s way.

The ultra-utilitarian appearance is meant to be for tradesmen in need of a tough car, like say, miners or farmers, but it also may appeal to folks who might be considering EVs like the Tesla Cybertruck or Rivian R1T.

The Munro MK1 will initially be offered in the five-seat, SUV body style, but a truck could come soon. The truck will have batteries ranging from 61.2 kWh (140 miles), to 82.4 kWh (186 miles). Those batteries feed either a 295 horsepower electric motor or a 375 horsepower one, good for a sub-5-second 0-60 time.

The brand wants to build 100 of them first, sending a handful to the U.S. for evaluation, and possibly eventual sale and manufacture here as well.
