Porsche Offers Dealer-Installed Charger Retrofit For Taycan That Cuts AC Charging Time In Half

The Porsche Taycan’s AC charging abilities just got really fast.

Sure, DC fast charging speeds are the cool, suave thing that most consumers want to know about when looking at an EV, but AC level 2 charging speeds are also important, too. Porsche announced a significant upgrade available for 2020 and up Porsche Taycans that can half the time it takes to charge on a level 2 AC charging socket.

The new 19.2 KW onboard charger is double the original size and can be retrofitted to Taycans 2020 and newer. (It can also be optioned on new build Taycans). This means, depending on trim, the Taycan could go from flat to full on a level 2 plug in as little as 4.8 hours.

There are caveats, though. Many level 2 chargers can’t output that much power, without serious upgrades. Porsche does sell a 19.2kW capable level 2 charger, but it does need some hefty amperage to support that level of power, a full 100 amp circuit to be exact. In older homes, oftentimes, the entire house is only rated for around 100 amps. Even newer 200-amp homes may struggle to accommodate the charger and the bevy of appliances that would also need the amperage.

The operation isn’t cheap, either. The new onboard charger is $1,250, but it requires 12 hours of labor to integrate. Add in tax, shop fees, and the onboard charger upgrade could cost upwards of $3,500 to implement. For some, that faster AC charging ability, may be worth the price of entry.
