Aptera shows off a design it calls production-intent.

The Aptera may have taken several forms since its inception in 2005, but the tri-wheel, solar electric car is arguably the closest it has ever been to production in its 17-year tenure. On New Year’s Eve, the brand took to Twitter to show off a design it calls production intent, dubbed “Delta.”

The Aptera’s unique three-wheel, open-wheel design remains, but overall the design has got some more refinement. Now, there’s a real interior with production-looking seats, plastics, and dashboard design. The exterior design, wheel skirts, and chassis all look to be about what we can expect when the Aptera finally does launch.

“In 2023 the Aptera team will begin systems integration and build Delta vehicles of various forms to be used for validation and crash testing. Once the crash testing and validation stages are complete, we will begin production of our Launch Edition vehicles,” said Aptera, in the description of its launch video on Youtube. Interestingly, Aptera says its vehicle will only be available in one configuration, something it says will help get production up and running quickly.

Specifications and more images won’t come until January 20, when the brand plans to tell everyone more about the vehicle’s capabilities. We do know, at least from several test drives from Youtube influencers and journalists alike, that the Aptera is a front-wheel-drive EV, that has solar panels that can help replenish the battery as it drives, or is parked. The brand claims it has 39,000 pre-orders for the vehicle.
