Now that the production BMW i3 and i8 have been officially revealed, more details on the German automaker’s sub-brand are surfacing.
Those hoping to see higher-performing variants of the i3 and the i8 are out of luck, as BMW has made it clear that the “i” sub-brand won’t benefit from the M division. According to BMW Group head of technology communications, Cypselus von Frakenburg, the two sub-brands will never mingle with one another.

“I don’t think that it would make sense to mix these two sub-brands in one car,” Frakenburg said. “We have the Ms, we have the i, and we have the BMW, the core brand.”
The production BMW i8 made its official public debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, sporting a hybrid system with 362 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque.
