The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has formally requested detailed records from Tesla’s internal investigation on the Model S fire incidents.

NHTSA is requesting all customer complaints, field reports, warranty claims and property damage claims in order to assess defect allegations. The investigation is focusing on whether or not road debris impacting the battery pack of the Model S can result in a short, stall or fire.

As a result, the American automaker will also have to divulge to the government if any changes to the vehicle’s design, material, composition or function have occurred in order to address any defect allegations.

Most recently, the German Federal Motor Transport Authority issued a statement concluding that the Model S had no manufacturer-related defects.
