The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall affecting 29,222 Tesla Model S vehicles and the possible fire risk with their NEMA 14-50 Universal Mobile Connector (UMC).
According to the recall notice, owners of the affected vehicles won’t have to take a visit to the dealership but will have to update the software in their vehicles. Once updated, the vehicle will be able to “detect any unexpected fluctuations in the input power or higher resistance connections to the vehicle. If detected, the onboard charging system will automatically reduce the charging current by 25%.”

Owners that haven’t received the software update can call a Tesla Service Center to arrange to have it installed. According to Tesla, the NEMA 14-50 adapters used for 240-volt recharging may overheat which “could cause problems including melted adapters, and in a worst-case scenario, fire.” The software update is being done over-the-air.
