What might have seemed like the most impractical part of the upcoming Tesla Model X crossover will make it through to series production.
The crazy side-swinging “falcon wing” doors seen on the concept preview toured to auto shows around the world aren’t too crazy for Tesla. Sensors keep the double-hinged doors from bumping up against objects when they open. What’s more, CEO Elon Musk says if you can fit the Model X between two other cars, the doors will open.
Model X production is expected to begin in early 2015 and is expected to sell exclusively as an all-wheel drive model to be priced above the Model S sedan. When that happens, the Model S will also be offered with all-wheel drive as an option.
