Tesla Gigafactory Site to be Determined Late 2014

Tesla CEO Elon Musk might want “hundreds” of Gigafactories, but the site for the first one won’t even be determined until late this year.

Speaking to investors, Musk confirmed that five states are under consideration for the first Gigafactory site: Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas and California. Though the first site’s location is still not determined, the American automaker will soon begin preparation in as many as three states “all the way to creating a foundation,” according to Musk.

Though creating a foundation may occur in up to three states, Tesla isn’t expected to select the first Gigafactory site until the end of the year. The Gigafactories are a crucial part of Tesla’s goal of producing an entry-level electric vehicle. The proposed plant will eventually cost as much as $5 billion to build and will employ as many as 6,500 employees.
