Thanks to stricter emissions laws than the rest of the country, California alone accounts for nearly half of plug-in vehicle sales in the US.
From December of 2010 to last month, 102,440 plug-in hybrid vehicles have been sold in California, while over the same time frame 250,000 plug-ins were sold throughout the country. That makes up roughly 40 percent of the domestic market when it comes to selling plug-in vehicles, which includes battery-only cars like the Tesla Model S or range-extended cars like the Chevy Volt.

California has set a goal of having 1.5 million plug-in cars on the road by 2025, and passing the 100,000 vehicle mark was big milestone according to Gov. Jerry Brown, but the State still has a long way to go.
The Obama administration also has goals set, hoping for 1 million plug-in cars on the road by 2015. That goal seems much less attainable, as by the end of this year there is only likely to be 300,000 of these vehicles on the road.
