Tesla hasn’t even started on its first Gigafactory and California is already hoping for a second.
The American automaker chose Nevada as the site for its first Gigafactory, shunning its home state of California after Nevada offered the company a $1.25-billion incentive. But that isn’t stopping California from lobbying to become the site for a second Gigafactory, something Tesla hasn’t even announced considering the first Gigafactory will cost around $5 billion.

According to a recent report from the Silicon Valley Business Journal, California’s congressional delegation has sent a letter to Tesla CEO Elon Musk urging him to choose the state as the site for the rumored second Gigafactory. In the open letter, the state pitches that “California offers tremendous advantages to businesses, including our diverse, highly-educated workforce, a high quality of life and an array of renewable energy resources and consumer incentives found nowhere else in the United States, making California well-suited for Tesla Motors next Gigafactory.”
California wasn’t even in consideration for the first Gigafactory, likely because of the state’s high development costs and heavy regulations.
