Tesla may be conceding that dealerships are a necessary part to its future.

In an interview with Autoline Daily, Tesla CEO Elon Musk admitted that relying on company stores might not be enough for the future of the American automaker. “We may need a hybrid system, with a combination of our own stores and some dealer franchises,” said Musk. In a way, Musk admits that the Tesla store formula won’t be able to handle the growth in all 50 states when it comes to sales, maintenance and repairs.

With the Model III in development and Tesla looking to produce a mass-market electric vehicle that would be priced around $30,000, it may be starting a new plan in order to support its upcoming model. The company hasn’t confirmed what it intends to actually do, but it’s looking more likely that Tesla will eventually issue franchises to third-party investors.
