No automaker is immune to ever-increasing fuel-economy legislation, not even luxury brands. To cope with these tightening regulations Audi is moving to electrify its entire range of high-performance RS models.
This tectonic shift is expected to take place by 2020, slightly ahead of tighter European emissions laws that go into effect the year after. Unfortunately it’s unclear at this time exactly how Audi would go about amping-up its enthusiast-focused range.
One option is electric turbocharging, something the company is currently tinkering with. This technology could find its way under the hood of Audi’s next-generation Q7 crossover.

The German automaker has also confirmed that it’s developing 48-volt electrical systems; today cars run on just 12. This update would work nicely with energy-dense lithium-ion batteries and could be beneficial for powering electric turbos.
Audi has a lot of options on the table, which is unfortunate because it keeps us guessing. What do you think they’ll do to improve the efficiency of their RS models?
