The Los Angeles Police Department is putting the BMW i3 to the test.
BMW has loaned the LAPD an i3 electric vehicle for 12 months as the first U.S. test of the innovative vehicle in an authority fleet. The test vehicle was unveiled sporting the famous LAPD black and white livery and a rooftop light bar. Along with being tested rigorously for a year, the BMW i3 will also be featured at public events during the loan period.

The BMW i3 evaluation is part of the police department’s initiative to add 100 electric vehicles to its fleet in the coming years. The i3 boasts 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque with a hybrid-synchronous electric motor and is good for 80 to 100 miles of emissions-free driving.
“The decision by the Los Angeles Police Department to undertake this evaluation highlights the compelling nature of the BMW i3 as a versatile, sustainable vehicle,” noted Christine Fleischer, manager of BMW i for BMW of North America. “By virtue of its innovative design and construction from leading-edge materials, the i3 is a brilliant fit with the technology-driven research philosophy of the LAPD. This will be a valuable learning experience for both BMW and the Department.”
