The BMW i3 is getting a new battery that will extend its range to over 124 miles.
The German automaker will reportedly introduce what sources call an “optimized driveline” that takes advantage of battery efficiency gains that have been developed since the BMW i3 originally launched in 2013. Although the new lithium-ion battery has the same 22-kWh capacity as the current unit, it will have a higher power density resulting in longer range.
Sources claim that it will extend the range of the BMW i3 to well over 124 miles in real-world use, compared to the current range of 80 to 100 miles.

In addition, BMW will update the i3 with a refreshed electronics package that boasts new software mapping for the battery cooling system and the electric motor. The company will also use the new battery on i3 models equipped with the range extender engine, a two-cylinder mill designed to produce electricity while running.
According to the report, current BMW i3 owners will have the option to have the new battery retrofitted onto existing vehicles.
The BMW i3 is powered by an electric motor that provides 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.
