The Volkswagen Microbus EV concept is rumored to bow at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

The confirmation comes from Gary Shapiro, president and chief executive of the company that organizes CES. According to Shapiro, the concept will be a “groundbreaking electric vehicle that will further illustrate the synergy between the Internet of Things and the automotive industry.”

The concept is expected to debut during a keynote speech by Herbert Diess, head of passengers cars at Volkswagen. During the address, Diess will outline Volkswagen’s vision for electric mobility and sustainability in what will likely be an important keynote in light of the German automaker’s recent diesel scandal.

Not much is known about the new Microbus despite being rumored for quite some time now. It is widely believed that the model will draw inspiration from the Bulli concept seen above that first debuted in 2011.

The 2016 CES concept is said to be a close preview of a planned production model that will be produced at Volkswagen’s Puebla factory in Mexico starting in 2017. It will feature a newly-developed electric powertrain that will deliver a range between 250 to 310 miles depending on driving conditions.
