McLaren is already hard at work on its next generation of supercars.
Although it lacked a high-profile debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, the company did reveal some of its future plans including that it’s working on a secret, battery-electric hypercar for its Ultimate Series lineup. That particular project will help the British automaker decide whether the McLaren P1’s successor will be all electric or a hybrid like the current P1. The replacement is expected to drop around 2023 as the company announced its six-year business plan, called Track22 because it reaches to 2022.
Under the announced plan, McLaren will double its turnover and invest around £1 billion on research and development to launch 15 new models. According to McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt, about half of the new McLarens will be hybrids with at least one being a “very special, very focused” Ultimate Series car. It was suggested however that the particular vehicle might not be a direct P1 replacement and will not necessarily join the segment in a similar price range.

Not surprisingly, McLaren will continue to exclusively build mid-engined two-seat sports cars. Their current 3.8-liter V8 will also continue to be developed. Flewitt did suggest that an “all-new engine architecture” will be introduced towards the end of the Track22 plan.
Looking to the near future, the company will launch the 570GT Spider next year and plans to make “LT” an official, track-focused sub-brand for special models. Flewitt shared that the 675LT was possibly the brand’s most successful car ever, selling out in just three weeks.
As for the secret hypercar in development, it is an all-electric one-off prototype that is being used to evaluate the benefits of a fully-electric powertrain. It will answer the question of whether the P1’s successor can be a pure battery-electric model.
