As automakers continue to strive towards improving fuel economy across its lineup, General Motors is considering a smaller, lighter-weight three-cylinder engine for its Chevrolet Volt and Cadillac ELR models.
The proposal hasn’t been approved yet by the American automaker, but under consideration is a 1.0- or 1.2-liter engine with three cylinders to replace the current 1.4-liter, four-cylinder found in the Volt and ELR. The three-cylinder powerplant is rumored to be developed by GM and its partners in China.

If the engine is approved for production, it won’t be seen in the Volt until 2015, when the sedan is due for a refresh. The ELR would receive the engine a year later. Unfortunately, no details were given on how much weight the three-cylinder would free up, or the improvements in fuel economy.
