Ford has an electric vehicle in the works with at least 200 miles of range to take the fight to the Chevy Bolt and Tesla Model 3.

In the short term, Ford will make due with 100 miles of all-electric range in the 2017 Focus EV, but CEO Mark Fields says that the brand is planning to go after the big boys in the segment. “Our EVs come down to making sure we’re the best or among the leaders in those area,” said Fields. “When you look at some of the competition, clearly that’s something we’re developing.”

The Chevrolet Bolt will be the first of these high-range, low-cost EVs to hit the market, slated for launch this year. The Bolt is said to cost around $30,000 after government incentives and offer a 200 mile range. Tesla’s Model 3, which is supposed to arrive in 2017, will have a range of about 215 miles and will cost $35,000 before incentives are added.

Ford recently announced a massive $4.5 billion investment into electrified vehicles, spread over five years. By 2020, the brand plans to offer 13 new EVs or hybrids, with 40 percent of its nameplates offering some sort of electrification.
