Tesla’s CEO sees Apple introducing a self-driving car but not before 2020.

Elon Musk, CEO of electric-car maker Tesla, identified Apple as a potential future competitor at a conference last Thursday. Asked at the Code Conference, which took place May 31-June 2 at the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, whether Apple would introduce a self-driving car, Musk replied that he believed they would.

“I’d think there will be volume production no sooner than 2020,” he said to Recode. But Musk also believes that may be too late, especially considering Tesla itself is quite advanced in its autonomous-driving technology.

There’s been rampant speculation over the years of Apple getting into the electric-car business and evidence that points to it but the tech giant has yet to confirm that electric vehcicles or self-driving cars are part of its future.

Oddly enough, Musk doesn’t see Google, which has already demonstrated its prowess in self-driving technology, as a future competitor.

“Google’s done a great job at showing the potential of autonomous transport, but they’re not a car company,” Musk said.

Musk believes Google is more likely to license its technology to other manufacturers in the autonomous car market.
