The Renault-Nissan Alliance will reportedly make a change to its motorsports program.
According to Motorsport.com, Nissan will replace Renault in Formula E, a move that makes sense considering the Nissan Leaf is one of the best-selling electric vehicles in the world. The swap will also land Formula E its first major Japanese automaker, although it might not be the last. When asked about Nissan, Toyota, and Honda joining Formula E, series CEO Alejandro Agag told Motorsport.com “one of those three, maybe two, will end up” participating in Formula E.
Although Honda has expressed interest in Formula E, the company appears to want to focus on its Formula 1 engine program for the time being. Toyota on the other hand, is currently reviewing the prospects of continuing in World Endurance Championship as its rivals start exiting the LMP1 category. Toyota has expressed an interest in competing, but has never formally registered.

We won’t know whether or not Nissan is heading to Formula E until next year, as an announcement might not be made until the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. If the swap does happen, it will bring Nissan back to a major international racing championship since it killed off its LMP1 project at the end of 2015. It will also allow Renault to focus on its Formula 1 program.
