One General Motors executive says Tesla‘s vehicles aren’t capable of level five autonomous driving.

Speaking to the Australian media in Detroit, Car Advice reports Scott Miller, GM’s director of autonomous vehicle integration, said Elon Musk is “full of crap” on his claims of level five autonomy on current and future Tesla models. As you may know, Tesla recently equipped its newest vehicles with different Autopilot hardware, saying eventually those vehicles will be capable of fully self-driving once the software is ready and regulations are in place. But Miller isn’t convinced that the hardware package is good enough for level five autonomous driving.

“To think you can see everything you need for a level five autonomous [car] with cameras and radar, I don’t know how you do that,” said Miller.

In short, Miller doesn’t believe Tesla’s current hardware package has the content to do level five autonomous driving, but his gripe may not be directly aimed at Tesla. Miller raises an interesting question, asking “Level five SAE? I mean is there a test for what that is?” He believes it is physically impossible to say a vehicle can achieve full level five with just cameras and radar.

“Do you really want to trust just one sensor measuring the speed of the car coming out of an intersection before you pull out? I think you need some confirmation. So, radar and LIDAR do a good job at measuring object speed, cameras do a great job at identifying objects. So, you can use the right sensor images to give you confidence in what you’re seeing, which I think is important if you’re going to put this technology out for general consumption,” he added.

GM is working on its own self-driving technologies, recently showing off the new Super Cruise system in the Cadillac CT6.
