The Canoo LDV inches closer to production.

Canoo, an EV startup with the interesting-looking, bubble-shaped EV, just announced that its vehicles have started to reach customers’ hands, sort of. The electric van, called the LDV, has made its way to Walmart’s delivery fleet, specifically based in the DFW (Dallas, Fort Worth) area.

This makes good on Canoo’s partnership with Walmart. A few months ago, Canoo entered into an agreement with Walmart, promising to supply the retail giant 4,500 Canoo LDV electric cargo vans. These EV cargo vans would be used for last-mile delivery, specifically for store-to-door. Now, a few of those vans have entered service, according to Canoo.  “It’s been awesome to work with Walmart’s highly experienced team to rapidly deploy our LDV’s in real world use cases to finalize a configuration for Walmart,” said Tony Aquila, CEO of Canoo, via a press release. “Our LDV has been engineered to enable a wide range of package deliveries, including refrigerated items, groceries and general merchandise and do it efficiently, emission free and with a high level of driver comfort and ergonomics. And we have been turning a lot of heads in the neighborhoods when driving by in our uniquely identifiable vehicles,” the press release continued.

It appears that these initial deliveries are some of the final validation steps to tailor the van explicitly for Walmart. There’s still no word when Canoo will start delivering passenger and cargo LDVs to reservation holders that aren’t Walmart, but on-road testing is a good sign from the company. Given the rumblings that Canoo is struggling, it seems like Canoo could really use the good press.
