Here’s an EV startup you probably haven’t heard of.

EV startups are a dime-a-dozen, and it’s easy to miss one, or put money on the wrong horse, so to speak. Some feel like cynical cash grabs from venture capital endeavors with big pockets, or sometimes, they’re backed by big, engineering firms with ideas and technological know-how.

Mullen and Hofer Powertrain is a German powertrain company, that has worked jointly with Mullen Automotive to bring us the Mullen Five EV SUV concept. Initially, the Mullen Five only existed in renderings, but now the company is taking the handful of prototypes on the road for select people to get experience with them. These vehicles will be part of Mullen’s “Strikingly Different” tour during 2023.

Mullen claims the EV crossover will have a 120 kWh battery, a range of 325 miles, and a 0-60 time of 3.25 seconds. The RS high-performance version supposedly will dart to 60 in under 2 seconds, and reach past 200 MPH. Mullen also claims that base models will start under $55,000.

While impressive, outlandish claims are all too common to nearly any EV startup in recent memory. Whether Mullen can deliver, is a different story. As it stands, it appears that the Mullen Five EV prototypes will only be available to be driven by reservation holders. Attendance to the Strikingly Different tour requires a reservation which costs $100. Mullen says the Five EV will be released by the fourth quarter of 2023.
