Tesla might be struggling through a PR disaster caused by several recent car fires but that hasn’t stopped CEO Elon Musk from dreaming big, announcing plans to take on the best selling vehicle in American: the Ford F-150.
While Musk has opined on the idea of an electric truck, his latest comments, delivered as part of a Business Insider conference, are more definitive.
Tesla has its eyes set on building an electric pickup thanks to the success of Ford’s F150. In Musk’s own words, “If you’re trying to replace the most gasoline miles driven, you have to look at what people are buying.” And considering the Ford F150 is the best-selling vehicle in America it shouldn’t be a surprise that Musk wants a piece of the pie.
“That’s the best selling car in America,” he commented. “If people are voting that’s their car, then that’s the car we have to deliver.”

And what a big pie it is with the F150 selling around 560,000 units through the first nine months of this year. To put that into perspective, though it’s hardly an apples to apples comparison, the Model S has seen about 14,000 units moved up to October.
There’s quite a bit on Tesla’s plate right now, with the Model X crossover set to enter production late next year. Then there’s the cheaper model that Musk continues to speak about, that will have quite the range for its price tag. As for the Tesla pickup truck, Musk commented that it wouldn’t be feasible for at least five years.
