The Nissan Leaf is the first plug-in vehicle that has sold over 30,000 units in a single year.

The Japanese automaker has announced that 30,200 Leaf electric vehicles were sold in 2014 after setting a December record of 3,102 units sold, a 22.7-percent increase compared to the prior year. Last month was also a December record for Leaf sales.

Since it first went on sale in December 2010, the Nissan Leaf has sold a total of 72,322 units in the U.S. and managed to sell over 3,000 units per month four times last year: May, July, August and December. The company sold nearly 1.4-million vehicles in the U.S. in 2014, up 11.1 percent from its 2013 total.

“Now in its fifth model year, Nissan LEAF is more popular than ever and continues to bring new buyers to Nissan,” said Brendan Jones, director, Nissan Electric Vehicle Sales and Infrastructure. “From the beginning our vision was to bring electric vehicles to the mass market in a practical and fun-to-drive package, which is what makes Nissan LEAF the best-selling electric car in the world.”
